The sentencing phase has begun for Nicholas Canfield, a man guilty of sexually abusing and murdering a 2-year-old girl.
On Friday, Canfield was unanimously found guilty by the jury, opening up the possibility of either life in prison or the death penalty.
WINK News spoke with Canfield’s defense attorney, Kevin Shirley, moments after the verdict was read.
“Was our team surprised? No. But we’re disappointed,” said Shirley.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a North Fort Myers home call in 2020 regarding an unresponsive child.
Canfield was the designated caretaker of the child as his girlfriend was asked to work overtime during the COVID-19 pandemic.
